Mahamuni Buddha Devotees

Devotees applying gold leaf to the Mahamuni (literally 'The Great Sage') Buddha Temple contains one of the five likenesses of the Buddha made during his lifetime. It is believed to have been cast in 554 BC in the city of Arakan at the request of King Sanda Thuriya and it was moved to its present site in Amarapura, south of Mandalay in 1784 by Prince Thado Minsaw. The 12 foot high statue weighs 6.5 tons and is currently covered with gold leaf to a thickness of almost 6 inches.
